Historical Notes
On September 11, 2001, New York City Police Department’s Emergency Service Unit (ESU) teams responded to the unfolding disaster at the World Trade Center. These teams are trained to assist people trapped or injured in dangerous settings. Officer David Brink, assigned to ESU Squad 3, based in the Bronx, joined rescue efforts in the North Tower.
Although he survived the collapse of both towers, Brink sustained injuries to his eyes from the debris cloud. He returned to Ground Zero a week later to work on the rescue and recovery, remaining on site as a part of the day shift until operations were concluded on May 30, 2002. He wore these boots while working at the site.
