Historical Notes
Soon after it was built, the World Trade Center, and specifically the Twin Towers, took on iconic status. Although initially criticized for their architecture of "gigantism," the two soaring towers soon became a landmark, looming large in the public imagination as an icon of New York City’s audacity and vitality. They were seen as a symbol of America itself—a place of possibilities and dreams that defied limitation.
The Twin Towers, one of New York City’s most photographed landmarks, were used in marketing, featured on postcards and souvenirs, and appeared in movies and television.
Soon after it was built, the World Trade Center, and specifically the Twin Towers, took on iconic status. Curator's Comment
Rae Ann Hoffmann joined the Port Authority in 1973 as a management trainee and continued at the Agency in various capacities until November 2010. In her role as General Manager, Marketing Communications Public Affairs Department, she established the Port Authority’s marketing communications service for the entire agency.
As Marketing Manager, Rae Ann was tasked with the job of promoting the World Trade Center through the production of advertisements, guidebooks, publicity materials, and other publications. The Port Authority focused on attracting tenants to occupy the office space at the World Trade Center and also on attracting tourists and New York residents to the various events, activities, and retail businesses at the complex. This scarf, worn by Rae Ann, features one of the logos used for the World Trade Center.
Rae Ann witnessed the terrorist attack on her workplace from her home in Brooklyn. All files were lost in the collapse of the North Tower. Many of the items she contributed to the Museum were her personal copies, saved at her Brooklyn apartment.
