Historical Notes
On 9/11, retail stores, houses of worship, and other establishments opened their doors to people walking north from lower Manhattan. Evacuees were offered bottled water, dust masks, sneakers, and other necessities. The New York City Rescue Mission, a shelter that provides emergency food, counseling, and other services, made telephones, showers, and other support available.
This flier was handed to Alex Zablocki on Canal Street as he attempted to make his way downtown to get home to Staten Island. He stayed at the Rescue Mission for some time before leaving with other Staten Island residents headed to the ferry.
