Sirius, 2001
Description
Acrylic on canvas painting by Ron Burns titled Sirius, 2001 depicting Sirius, a Port Authority Police bomb-sniffing Labrador, the only known K-9 victim on 9/11.
Historical Notes
As a bomb-sniffing dog for the Port Authority Police Department (PAPD), Sirius searched vehicles entering the World Trade Center as well as unattended packages and vehicles. On 9/11, the Labrador retriever had been working at the site for a little more than a year with his partner, PAPD Lieutenant David Lim. Sirius was the only police dog killed in the attacks.
Artist Ron Burns, who creates animal paintings as a career, took an interest in Sirius when he heard the dog’s story on television after the 9/11 attacks. Burns contacted Lim and received photographs of Sirius from him, which he used to paint this portrait. The painting is one in a series that Burns made of the dogs of 9/11.
