Historical Notes Native New Yorker Michael Carroll lived in Ridgewood, New Jersey, with his wife, Nancy, and their two children. He was known as a fun-loving, childlike parent and kept a shovel in his car for building sand castles at the beach. A 16-year veteran firefighter, Michael was assigned to FDNY Ladder Company 3. On September 11, Firefighter Carroll and his unit responded to the Twin Towers. He was 39 years old.
