New York Metamorphosis
Description
Charcoal drawing titled New York Metamorphosis by Torild Stray. The drawing depicts a view of midtown as seen from the 85th floor of the North Tower. The Empire State Building is visible in the center, with portions of the Hudson River on the left and the East River on the right.
Historical Notes
In 1997, Norwegian-born artist Torild Stray was invited to participate in a yearlong residency hosted in the Twin Towers as part of the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s new World Views initiative. The program provided selected artists with studios in vacant, light-filled workspaces located on various floors of the buildings. Inspired by these elevated vistas, Stray produced numerous cityscapes that evoked New York’s expansive energy. More than 150 artists served residencies in the Twin Towers before the buildings’ destruction.
