Description
Oil painting on canvas, Untitled (1979) by Peter Ruta (1918-2016). The painting depicts the southern view of lower Manhattan on the West Side, including the World Trade Center Twin Towers. The South Tower is nearly entirely blocked by the North Tower.
Historical Notes
Artist Peter Ruta often set up his easel on the roof of his studio in the Westbeth Artist Housing Complex in the West Village. From this vantage, he could watch the emerging construction of the World Trade Center complex in lower Manhattan. He often documented the distinctive, rising forms of Minuro Yamasaki’s Twin Towers.
