Historical Notes
Port Authority employee John Bartelstone walked down dark and smoke-filled stairwells on February 26, 1993, after terrorists detonated a truck bomb in the garage at the World Trade Center. Bartlestone used a napkin to cover his nose and mouth to filter out the smoke as he evacuated from his 73rd floor office in the North Tower. He later saved the soot-covered napkin, sealing it inside a plastic bag that he labeled.
