Historical Notes
This damaged stop sign was found by Justin Spivey on the afternoon of February 26, 1993. The Cooper Union student, at the time, and his classmate Gregory Miller went to see what was happening at the World Trade Center following reports that a transformer had exploded in the area.
When the pair first emerged from the Cortlandt Street subway station, they encountered a scene of mayhem. Curious to witness the cause of the disaster themselves and unaware that they were entering a crime scene, the young men retrieved two damaged STOP signs they found lying nearby. After returning to their dormitory later in the day, they discovered the disaster was caused by a truck bomb detonated by terrorists in the garage underneath the North Tower.
