Historical Notes
Created from layering pictures in Photoshop, this digital work by artist Roz Dimon tells the story of Pale Male, the famous red-tailed hawk that took up residence on a Fifth Avenue apartment building and captured New Yorkers' hearts. Other images include the Twin Towers, the lower Manhattan skyline, and a crucifix, overlapping to create a contemporary stained-glass window. For Dimon, the hawk’s journey is “a story about finding home when we’ve lost our own.” The online experience can be accessed here.

Curator's Comment
Roz Dimon worked at the World Trade Center for 10 years in the “dot.com” industry. After the work day ended, she would use equipment on hand in her company’s graphics department to hone skills useful for her burgeoning digital art practice. Shortly before September 2001, Dimon’s company downsized and she was laid off. She thus avoided direct intersection with the crisis at the World Trade Center on September 11.
After the attacks, Dimon struggled to resume creative production. Looking for inspiration, she visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art to see an exhibition on religious icons. She was struck by a wall label that read, “Icons were a source of comfort to a nation besieged." Inspired, she looked for a contemporary symbol that would bring hope to a mourning country and began creating Pale Male: A Pilgrimage.
