Fresh Kills: Elegy XVII
Description
Framed collage titled Fresh Kills: Elegy XVII by John Schweitzer. This piece depicts a page from the New York Times, September 29, 2001, with a child’s drawing of an American flag and an outline of a world on top in yellow paint. At the bottom is a picture of a collage of torn construction paper depicting an airplane crashing into two towers attributed to Joel Cruz, 8, from The Day Our World Changed: Children's Art of 9/11.
Historical Notes
In response to the events of 9/11, artist John Schweitzer created Fresh Kills: XXIV Elegies, a series of 24 collages made by attaching mixed materials, mainly found ephemera, onto a flat surface. Though he was not in New York on September 11, 2001, he had previously lived in the city for five years and was deeply saddened by the attacks that targeted his former home and country.
