Fresh Kills: Elegy XV
Description
Framed collage titled Fresh Kills: Elegy XV by John Schweitzer. This piece depicts corrugated cardboard layered with newspaper pages from the New York Times, May 26, 2002, with the headline “Fighting to Live as the Towers Died” with a close-up image of people hanging out of the windows of the Towers. A partial page from the National Post, September 12, 2001, includes a similar photo. A large piece of black paper on the right is layered with a small piece of corrugated cardboard with a window cut out of it. In the upper right is XV written in Roman numerals in pastel.
Historical Notes
In response to the events of 9/11, artist John Schweitzer created Fresh Kills: XXIV Elegies, a series of 24 collages made by attaching mixed materials, mainly found ephemera, onto a flat surface. Though he was not in New York on September 11, 2001, he had previously lived in the city for five years and was deeply saddened by the attacks that targeted his former home and country.
