Fresh Kills: Elegy I
Framed collage titled Fresh Kills: Elegy I by John Schweitzer. This piece depicts a piece of tan paper layered with four pages in black and white. The upper right and lower left pages both read “to whom it may concern.” On the lower right is a black-and-white image of the Statue of Liberty with a piece of scrap paper in red with white text: “Francis Poulenc | Dialogues of the Carmelites.” On the left is a ticket from the Empire State Building observatory. On the top left is a stencil of the letter O or number 0.
In response to the events of 9/11, artist John Schweitzer created Fresh Kills: XXIV Elegies, a series of 24 collages made by attaching mixed materials, mainly found ephemera, onto a flat surface. Though he was not in New York on September 11, 2001, he had previously lived in the city for five years and was deeply saddened by the attacks that targeted his former home and country.
