Historical Notes Native New Yorker Douglas Karpiloff lived in Mamaroneck, New York. He and his wife, Jacqueline, had two children. Douglas had worked at the Port Authority for 30 years. After the 1993 bombing, he led a massive security upgrade at the World Trade Center and was promoted to its security and life safety director in 1999. On September 11, Douglas aided the evacuation of the towers. He was 53 years old.
Curator's Comment To welcome tenants back to the towers and help them feel comfortable inside the buildings after the February 26, 1993, bombing, the Port Authority distributed free pastries, souvenir coffee mugs, and coupons that could be used at the World Trade Center shopping concourse. HIDE
