Historical Notes
A lifelong resident of Queens, Carl Bedigian lived with his wife, Michele. The two would have celebrated their first anniversary on September 30. A firefighter with FDNY Engine Company 214, Carl had recently resumed active service after recovering from a spinal cord injury. On September 11, Firefighter Bedigian arrived at the World Trade Center shortly after the first alarms. He was 35 years old.
Native New Yorker John Florio lived in Oceanside, Long Island, with his wife, Shari, and their two children. He was a heavy metal music fan who corresponded with the lead singer of the band Metallica and played the band’s music while on the job with FDNY Engine Company 214. On September 11, Firefighter Florio was covering a shift for another firefighter and responded to the towers. He was 33 years old.
Brooklyn-born Michael Roberts lived in Roxbury in Queens. Michael, who was single, often volunteered to cover holiday shifts at FDNY Engine Company 214 so fellow firefighters could be with their families. Michael’s badge number was 6611—the number carried by his father and an uncle before him. On September 11, Firefighter Roberts responded to the Twin Towers. He was 31 years old.
Kenneth Watson grew up in Smithtown on Long Island and lived there with his wife, Susan, and their four children. He enjoyed camping, hunting, and riding horses. He worked as an ironworker before becoming a firefighter with FDNY Engine Company 214. A cousin, Richard Muldowney, also served in the FDNY. On September 11, both responded to the towers. Firefighter Muldowney was 40 years old. Firefighter Watson was 39.
Manhattan native Christopher Sullivan lived in North Massapequa, Long Island, with his wife, Dolores, and their two young sons. In his free time, Christopher enjoyed fishing for snapper off Fire Island and camping in New England with his family. On September 11, Lieutenant Sullivan, a member of FDNY Ladder Company 111, responded to the World Trade Center. He was 39 years old.
