Description
Lanyard covered with various lapel pins including commemorative 9/11 pins as well as pins representing different first responder agencies. Attached to the lanyard is an ID tag with a photograph of Nikie on the front (name misspelled as "NIKE") as well as a bone-shaped patriotic dog tag with engraved text: "NIKIE | Ground Zero | 9-11-01 - 5-20-02."

Historical Notes
Nikie, a golden retriever, worked at Ground Zero with his handler, Frank Shane. Trained by K-9 Disaster Relief, a humanitarian organization that uses dogs to help disaster victims, Nikie received credentials through the American Red Cross. Wearing a work vest, a bandana, and booties to protect his paws, Nikie roamed the site and respite centers with Shane. Offering comfort in a grim place, Nikie provided relief from the emotional stress of recovery work.
