Description
EMS rescue helmet. The helmet is orange colored, has a full brim, rubber impact rim, face shield, chin strap, and neck protector. On the exterior are reflective yellow stickers as well as two blue EMS Star of Life symbols on either side. "GAYER" is handwritten on the brim and on the top of the helmet. Two white hand flashlights have been taped to the sides of the helmet with several layers of duct tape. On the underside of the front brim "Bob Gayer" is written in black marker and on the underside of the back brim is written: "9-11-2001 and 9-13-2001."
Historical Notes
Volunteers of every age, background, and ability flocked to Ground Zero, intent on supporting rescue and recovery operations. Some signed on with organizations such as the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army, while others volunteered independently.
