Historical Notes
Fires at the World Trade Center site burned belowground for months after 9/11, sometimes flaring to extremely high temperatures. Even objects designed to resist high heat, such as firefighting gear and equipment, burned or melted. Two fire extinguishers used to hold foam and water were found crushed and fused to the back step of a fire truck at Ground Zero.
