Description
Recovered identification plaque for Bent Propeller, sometimes known as The World Trade Center Stabile, used to identify this sculpture at the World Trade Center complex. The plaque is discolored and heavily scratched but the engraved text is still visible: "Alexander Calder | (American 1898–1976) | The World Trade Center Stabile, 1970."
Historical Notes
In 1970, the Port Authority commissioned artist Alexander Calder (American, 1898–1976) to create a sculpture for the new World Trade Center Plaza. Bent Propeller was originally installed on the west side of the complex, facing West Street. It was later placed near the intersection of Church and Vesey Streets and then in front of 7 World Trade Center, where it stood on 9/11. Only fragments were recovered.
