Historical Notes
Scientists collected and studied World Trade Center dust and its potentially adverse health effects. Less than a week after 9/11, Dr. Paul J. Lioy of the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School initiated an investigation in collaboration with other scientists. His analysis concluded that the dust contained lead and asbestos, and its pulverized cement and glass fibers were likely related to the respiratory problems experienced by emergency responders, recovery workers, the volunteers who supported them, and those living and working in lower Manhattan.
