Historical Notes
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) studied steel pieces recovered from the World Trade Center site. The agency sought to determine why and how the Twin Towers and 7 World Trade Center collapsed and to recommend improvements in building safety. In 2008, the International Code Council passed 23 building and fire code changes based on NIST’s recommendations.
The shape of this piece suggests that is was deformed due to compression at the onset of North Tower’s collapse at the 98th floor.
