National Disaster Medical System (NDMS) USA Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team (DMORT) patch. The patch is primarily black with text embroidered in yellow: "NDMS - USA | DMORT | Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team." The center of the patch includes the DMORT logo with embroidered images of a fingerprint, teeth, a computer, DNA strand, a skeletal head, a flying dove, and a caduceus on the scales of justice.
After a mass disaster, the federal government mobilizes Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Teams (DMORT) to provide support to local authorities in identifying and preparing victims’ remains. DMORT teams include forensic specialists, medical experts, funeral directors, and others. The DMORT patch incorporates symbols that represent those disciplines. September 11, 2001, marked the first nationwide DMORT activation.
