Historical Notes
After a mass disaster, the federal government mobilizes Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Teams (DMORT) to provide support to local authorities in identifying and preparing victims’ remains. DMORT teams include forensic specialists, medical experts, funeral directors, and others. The DMORT patch incorporates symbols that represent those disciplines. September 11, 2001, marked the first nationwide DMORT activation.
