Historical Notes
The discovery of human remains in a utility manhole at the World Trade Center site in October 2006 prompted an expanded search for potential human remains. From 2006 to 2010, OCME forensic archaeologists excavated streets along the perimeter of the site and searched rooftops and utility manholes as well as places inaccessible during the initial recovery. More than a thousand potential human remains were recovered, enabling DNA analysts to make 13 new victim identifications. This shoe was excavated during that period.
