Historical Notes
After evacuating from his office on the 62nd floor of the North Tower, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey employee Stephen Kern was in the 5 World Trade Center building when the South Tower collapsed. He narrowly escaped the collapse of the North Tower before continuing on foot uptown to safety. He saved his dust-covered shoes as a memento of his evacuation experience. Kern was also a survivor of the February 26, 1993, World Trade Center bombing.
