Historical Notes
Stephen Kern was in his 62nd floor office when hijacked Flight 11 struck the North Tower. After feeling the building shake, he decided to evacuate with other colleagues who speculated that an earthquake had just occurred. During his long stairwell descent, Kern learned that a terrorist attack on the World Trade Center was underway. He was in the Concourse Mall when the South Tower collapsed. Once he reached the street, he walked away from the area in search of a pay phone and later witnessed the collapse of the North Tower. He saved his dust-covered shoes as a reminder of his evacuation experience. Kern was also a survivor of the February 26, 1993, World Trade Center bombing.
