Historical Notes
Dust, ash, and debris from the collapsed Twin Towers filled the interior of Chelsea Jeans, a retail store on Broadway near Fulton Street. Store owner David Cohen resolved to capture the moment in time by maintaining part of the store as it appeared after 9/11. This memorial was seen by thousands, including rescue and recovery workers, people returning to work in the area, and those coming to Ground Zero to pay their respects. After a struggle to stay in business, the store closed in October 2002. The New-York Historical Society removed and preserved the memorial as documentary evidence.
