Glass pipe stand containing a small amount of rubble and fine gray dust mixed together with a quarter, nickle, and dime.
Historical Notes
Immediately after the collapse of the Twin Towers, layers of thick gray dust and ash coated streets, vehicles, windows, and the interiors of homes and offices throughout lower Manhattan. The dust was a presence for months. Some people collected dust in an impulse to preserve and document what they experienced.
Dr. Charles Hirsch, Chief Medical Examiner on September 11, 2001, was in the vicinity of the World Trade Center when the Twin Towers collapsed. When he eventually returned to his midtown office, Hirsch emptied the contents of his pocket and kept the dust, rubble, and coins in this glass pipe stand.
