Historical Notes
In the wake of 9/11, even people who had not considered themselves especially patriotic displayed the American flag on their houses, cars, and clothing. Long Island restaurateur Ziggy Attias noticed that flags flying on car radio antennas or hanging from overpasses would fall off and land on the side of the road. Attias rescued more than a hundred of these flags from the shoulders and median strips of a Long Island highway.
