Historical Notes
The collapse of the South Tower shattered the windows of the 10th-floor Battery Park City home of the Gupta family, filling it with dust and debris. Flames singed an antique chair, one of a set that had been a wedding gift to the Guptas years earlier. Despite its condition and the reminder it provoked of the event’s violence, the couple saved the chair as a memento of the day and of their prolonged efforts to return home.
