Historical Notes
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio presented this ceremonial key to retired FDNY Firefighter Ray Pfeifer on January 9, 2016. Firefighter Pfeifer played a leading role in the grassroots campaign to ensure the passage of the Zadroga Act by meeting with lawmakers and telling them about his service at Ground Zero and his deteriorating health. In 2009, he had been diagnosed with a form of kidney cancer, one of the cancers linked to 9/11. To accept this key to the City, Pfeifer stood from his wheelchair.
