Historical Notes Red Bank, New Jersey, native Karl Smith lived in Little Silver. He and his wife, Joanne, had two teenage sons. A former U.S. Marine, Karl played soccer and was training for a triathlon. He was also a fan of rock bands such as Cream and Deep Purple and often played along on air guitar. On September 11, Karl, a bond broker at Cantor Fitzgerald, was at work on the North Tower’s 104th floor. He was 44 years old.
